Sujay :

I have no experince in cycling cross country, but I can still think of a few recommendations :

Make sure you carry enough writing material. Take notes every day - weather, riding conditions, distance covered, people you met, food you ate, any other interesting sites you saw. Summer is the biggest time for local festivities that you may not read about, in the press or on the web.

Make sure you write your impressions as soon as possible. At the end of 40-45 days everything will be a blur otherwise.

Can manage to get an MP3 CD player and a handful of CDs with several hundred songs of your choice ? You may be able to borrow books on CD from your local library as well.

Take a sturdy camera with you, but try not to carry too much film . Buy a few rolls at a time as you need them. The exposure to the heat/rain may affect the quality of the film.

Some years ( 1996-1997 ??) ago a journalist did a long haul bike trip along the north edge of Australia from the east to the west ( I think ). There was a series of articles about it in the National Geographic.
The author wrote about psychological aspects of such an arduous and lonely journey.See if you are able to read those articles.

Look forward to reading about your trip .

Best wishes

shonoo,
I am definitely planning to take writing material and keep a diary. actually, I'm even toying with the idea of getting this published in a weekly or so. if anyone has any contacts in "sakaL" that will be great!
I have a portable MP3 CD player, but on a cycle every ounce is at a premium, plus the threat of theft, plus wear and tear, plus need of batteries add up to a no.
I am going with my waterproof Canon. I will carry my own rolls.
I am a member of NGS, and been an avid reader for a long while. I have read those articles, anyway, nice you reminded me of it! I will read those again before I leave.

daf, thanks!

I have experience of riding in heat, and I can manage without water for quite a while >>

I have done some long distance biking ...

some things I could think abt off the top of my head...

1. Although I find that I can sustain myself w/o water for upto 2 days while on hiking/rock climbing trips, long distance biking madhe try not to survive w/o water for long. Biking+Heat = severe dehydration. And that will lead to severe muscle cramps later on towards the end of your journey...it is painful. First time i biked, I thot I could survive with minimal water intake, but I suffered a lot from muscle cramps later on..

Also, heat ni lips fut_taat (at least maaze tari) ... be mindful of those issues ... take enuf first-aid.

2. Definitely get special insoles for your shoes and heavy cushioning for the cyle seat. Blisters can be a big problem.....also try taking a pair of sandals along to give ur feet air once in a while...feels good ..

more laterz ....

and yes, good luck !!

mave,

what I said about water was just about emergencies. on all my trial rides, I try to see how far I can go without water, even if I have it. I know that I am returning home after a while, and can drink as much as I want. on the real run, I will definitely not do that. and even on the real one also, "quite a while" is anyway put to end when I stop in the evening, because there I can take my fill on water. I am planning all my stops so that I reach civilization every evening, and leave 2 hrs of daylight as a buffer.

my shoes are soft, and I've been riding, hiking in them for about 2 years now. I am very comfortable in them. the same goes for my cycle seat. but the points you've raised are quite important. I know what blisters can do!

the trip to duluth was great fun. I did 147Km, 141Km, 136Km and 139Km. two days going up, two days coming down. I wish I could give a nice description of it all.

The WORST NEWS is that my cycle got stolen today morning. it's not just a 400$ loss, it means good bye to something which had almost become a part of my body. it means buying a new cycle, getting used to its quirks, learning to trust it. I don't know how I am going to manage the financial and psychological blow. i'm working out the math, and tying to keep a level head.

shailu,
i'm already in touch with sakal. but if I need, I will definitely ask your help.

prasad, the carrier and bottle cage you paid for are gone.

geeta, the speedometer you gifted me on my birthday is without it's cable and sensor now.
