Introduction
The Lord Ganesha represents the most basic rule of human evolution –mind the mind, perpetual self-control, action, self-improvement, performing the destined duties, without bitterness. Climb up the path with the continuous focus on the ultimate purpose of our lives, self-fulfillment as a divinity itself. How to go about it is revealed in this prayer to his formless divinity residing in our minds and a commonly seen ,easier to know, form of an elephant god whose place is our eyes and heart.. For a modern manager and decision maker ,Non Believer HE is the ALGORYTHM to begin, IMPLEMENT AND FINISH GREAT GOALS keeping all heads stable ,disciplined, focused to the task without loosing the JOY while doing the job and of its final fulfillment .So whoever YOU are you will need “Ganesha” in any form you accept...always.
Understand Lord Ganesha-remember him before everything you do. Image or icon worship is logical to those who understand it fully. Behind every icon the Supreme is formless and omnipresent FORCE INSIDE AND AROUND US. The various form worship is a heart to heart worship of the qualities which these heroes of Puranas , remind us when you see their human form. Don’t’ you feel inspired when you see your parents ,teachers or childrens’ photographs in various moods. The GOD of the HUMAN’s has to be a human who rose up to superhuman status. For a hindu human life is a celebration of survival and self improvement and all the events of life are dealt with equal wisdom and equanimity. All scriptures are in a form of Poetry-prayer for various goals. The prayer to Lord Ganesha is called,
“ATHARVA -SHIRSHA”= NOT UNSTABLE MIND/HEAD=COOL HEAD..(how to keep..)
It helps anybody anytime to keep a cool head which thinks pros and cons of the matter to be decided at that split second or in the time available. Better decisions better results for you if you remember Ganapati –the cool headed leader of all, before every step you take. So he is remembered as a dear one before every event in a “Hindu” way of life. Even those who do not believe in icons can believe in his true ‘nirgun’= no human quality or ‘nirakar’= no symbol or shape , form which is in all human minds as a “GOD” who guides us when we require him to. HE guides us from within keeping our heads ‘cool’ and thoughtful using our known resources. HIS thought should come first so that you may get optimum results for your endeavors. His form is only a perpetual human reminder of qualities which would help us realize the purpose of our lives. For many it is easy to be so alert always ,if one falls in love with the form itself as a “devotee” who worships this icon!!….
Look AT HIM AND THEN REALISE YOURSELF..
• Big Head= Mind the mind, first, ever and always.
• BIG EARS..listen more..listen and keep what you want..keep the grain throw the chaff-unwanted ones.
• LONG SNOUT in front of the mouth –‘sniff’ ,look around whom you are with, where you are, time , need etc. before you OPEN your mouth!
• Long half tooth.= Elephants have two different sets of teeth one to instill fear for show and one to chew grass without harming any being. Half means the tooth that is to be feared should not be sharp enough to fatally wound even the enemy. Words can kill and start wars. Defend yourself well, probably causing minimum damage to your enemy. Do not burn bridges if possible.
• BIG TUMMY= All evolves from within HIM and self destruct and enter back into him. Also he says keep things you see and hear IN. Mind the mind and your mouth NOT to blurt the inflammable words or facts out needlessly. Learn to use these later on if needed. Keep Eyes and ears open and mouth shut.
• HANDS {4}: One has the sharp weapon “ANKUSH” which can control our elephantine desires and deflate our inflated egos- to be kept in perpetual readiness for use on self ! The other hand has the “PASH” the that which binds us as , the external enemies-physical and mental, which causes us damage. The third has a ‘tooth’ as a weapon, which empowers and enslaves the evil-obstructive elements causing trouble to the devotees. The fourth hand is raised in “abhaya” mudra ,”I will ever protect you from all evil” message to those who surrender to HIM in any form.
• LOTUS around the form represents all the gentleness you can gather inside with open mind. The snout seeks the sweetest ‘laddoos’ ,reminding us to be perpetually alert to sustain ‘madhurya= love for all, compassion, or ‘sweetness’ in our inner selves. Prevent the bitterness of all kinds in all forms which are the easiest to enter and thrive inside us and make our living a hell. It leaves a bad taste in every interaction with others and furthers the negative image you have about your self and others have for you. Easy irritability, anger, fault finding, jealousy, revenge guilt all puncture your efforts for joyful living. Your contribution to your own and social welfare-duties suffer and you go in a self perpetuating cycle of self destruction. Come out of it by hanging on and climbing up the rope-trunk-snout of sweetness-love which the Ganapati is dangling from above in form of Atharva shirsha poem of self effacing love. You have to make very active efforts to keep the flame of this limitless ‘madhurya’=love-respect for self and others as divine creations. Feel that we all are imperfect and are striving towards revelation of the Divinity within all of us. Eating laddoos is symbolic reminder of limitless need for refurbishing the ever-diminishing stock of this inner sweetness with which we treat self and others. O lord grant me this difficult ability of this sublime sweetness. Let me act always with DISCIPLINE,FOCUS AND ‘MADHURYA’ as I walk my path of self discovery, duty and fulfillment in life .

*This poetry is a prayer of the faithful to HIM in any form YOU think he is , but ‘temporarily’ in form of an elephant god head ,who reminds us his qualities and message BY HIS FORM itself ! He inspires us to rise above ourselves and keep our head stable=’cool’ by 3 pronged strategy. The efforts should be on 3 fronts-1.’Karma’= just do it, actually implementing what needs to be done. Steps taken to control self, dispel all negative thoughts which makes your mind unstable .
2. ‘Upasana’=devotion, faithful meditation.
3. ‘Gnyana’=true wisdom unshakeable truth which dispels all doubts, myths, egoistic preconceptions, grief over ‘minor’ matters, affections, passions, fickle fads etc.
Withdraw from dependency of your mind and body from wants ,desires, lust, all things you know which can give you only a temporary satisfaction and life long longings for MORE. Enjoy all without being dependent on them and have inbuilt ability to do without these all in an instant of their withdrawal.

Wisdom of “ATHARVA SHIRSHA’ prayer-poem
O LORD GANESHA..
• EARS…Let me hear only the good and the best ,which will take me to higher level of existence all the time, always alert to avoid impending disasters.
• EYES…Let my narrow minded attitude dissolve and large hearted ness birds eye view of any situation develop in my eyes all the time. Let them see only the good and ‘god’ in all , see beyond self, learn from all beings .
• THOUGHTS..let my mind think positively for self and all others. Mind the mind for it itself can give you peace or painful agitation as YOU wish and allow it .
• SENSORY faculties …senses of skin ,eyes, ears, taste, smell and others variations which gives us pleasure and pain should be under OUR control to be called ‘gods’. They are governed by mind, which is the only thing you can actually train yourself to control! Do it.
• SURYA-the sun …seen by all..its light and warmth reminds us of disciplined activity round the clock,for others,seeking light of wisdom in ever changing situations of life. It is the Symbol of positive energy which dispels all things unwanted and harmful.
• Garud bird-eagle like mind is to be developed by self training. This will rise high in level of thinking, and dive towards its target with determination, confidence and devotion without self doubts disturbing the direction of your efforts. Let my mind be like this garuda –eagle.
• GURU..teacher ..let me find teachers according to my requirements of target and time. HE will teach me and reveal to me secrets of this passage towards GOD -ly goal where there is everlasting peace and bliss. HE is the boat on which I can sail the oceans of the life and reach my destination for which I was destined.HE will make me realize my full potential for betterment of self and the society where I live. This is ‘moksha’ the ultimate satisfaction of ones’ existence. But only a true selfless GURU can make you realize your true potential, ‘atma-swarup’ actual skills-arts-form you have within you for great benefit to self and society. HE makes you realize this form and helps you to achieve it in its finest form so that you feel fulfilled.
• OBSTACLES TO GROWTH… and fulfillment are three. Spiritual=mind-body diversions, pains, diseases which do not allow you to DO things required to be done. EXTERNAL FORCES = people-animal around you who do purposeful damage to your actions-efforts. CALAMITIES like environmental factors, rain, floods , earthquakes, disasters accidents unexpected by you. All these cause diversions to your path to self-improvement. Always be alert to these.
The cool mind trained by WILL,will help you overcome these diversions easily even as they arise always in all. So let my mind be ‘atharvan’=cool-calm..
O GANESHA help me achieve it.
Your ‘om’ form is divine, if I remember you in this shortest form, my mind will stabilize and realize all the ways to achieve my goals by dodging all the obstacles which will be revealed to me beforehand.
Efforts and Timely action to achieve my goals is within my reach. Destiny with known-unknown-unforeseen obstacles lies within folds of future so that is beyond MY control. I accept this when I begin my full hearted well thought and well timed actions . THAT is within YOUR reach O Ganesha ,so help me with it. My unflagging devotion towards you will see through these unforeseen factors. DEVOTION is not only a sentiment but complete ‘samarpan’=surrender to the God you believe in. This allows your timely and adequate efforts reach their goal and achieve glory . The doer is in complete cool trance, undisturbed, action oriented and with peaceful mind, unmindful of anxieties for desired results on the way up. So he achieves his goal.
‘Gana –pati’ means ‘leader of men’ ,which you yourself will be IF you continually think of HIM as a form and formless ‘om’-the god within your mind who teaches you these mind games to achieve the goals. He teaches you what is fickle and which goal is everlasting!
• When I pray thee ,I would be praying to myself as YOU are within me ,I am You, You are within me.
• Let me seek ,understand and utter only that which is the truth with un corrupted innocent mind. Let me know the true nature of GOD, which is not destroyed physically by icono breakers or by logical arguments-imagined concepts. All other forms of gods try to establish their uniqueness. While Ganesha ‘s form and formless identity seeks unified concept of all that is godliness which any human seeks-if you can understand HIM. He embodies human form of GOD and the superhuman formless symbolic God as per your belief-faith-devotion-view of life.
• Type 1:For the devotional icon worshipper he remains in the humane heart, which guides the devotee perpetually.
• Type 2.: For those who want to see beyond his iconic form HE is a formless superhuman who resides in the MIND in a logical form required by the seeker, but doing the same job!
• O lord defend me from all sides and from all living and unknown factors-obstacles by making my mind stable and ever alert . Inculcate discipline in all my senses which more and more ever. Make me ego less but self reliant, flexible to bow but disciplined enough not to fall victim to wants-lusts.
• Guard my teachers, eager learners, my devotion-faith in you when there is defeat-failure or a set back.
• The life is like a flowing river with bends and falls- difficult and demanding. Only unflagging devotion and faith in YOU will perpetually provide me with self-confidence, patience and perseverance to overcome certain failure and feeling of hopelessness. So guard my faith in you, never allow doubts to engulf my mind.
• WEST-Guard me from past karmas- the results of my improper conduct then which fill me with pride or grief. (west direction)
• EAST- Guard me from the events happening NOW and affecting me to do wrong or shake my faith and confidence.
• NORTH- guard me from from excess of everything- Money, Power, which would spoil me and take me to my destruction by aggravating animal instincts.
• SOUTH-(Yama )Untimely death and morbidity diseases ,guard me from these too. The devaluation of life by corruption and ignorance , is also a form of death of divinity, guard me from this too. Lead me towards divinity ever.
• Upward – guard me from corruption arising unexpectedly from within my mind- ego, jealousy towards other paths-people, ill feelings or expectancy of rewards titles from my efforts of devotion and social welfare .
• Down wards- the earth on which I walk I trample lots of living beings and cause them harm.Guard me from these and other unknown faults or sins emerging beneath me O earth.
• Thus defend me from these faults arising from these TEN directions, O remover of all obstacles,Ganesha!
• You are the divine and helpful SPEECH itself ,for all of us. Whatever good emerges from human speech, you are responsible for it ,thank you O god!
• You are the LIFE itself in the living beings .You are the light in all that shines physically and in our minds. You guide us in divine direction and you remove the darkness of ignorance .
• Grant me peace and bliss, smiles and laughter, indestructible state of energetic mind which will help me achieve my goals and prosperity for me and others. Let me know the difference between fickle and everlasting joys of life through YOUR wisdom.
• YOU are the wisdom and science itself .You have revealed to me that I am thee, one with HIM and am capable of infinite as YOU are. This unbridled ethereal wisdom based on divine experience, is the science of my existence. All this I would learn from YOU through my right Teacher who will clear all my doubts.
• Everything you know is the different manifestation of the same divine force. This force is within everything you see or know that exists. “Maya” is the force, which makes impossible, a possibility. Maya is the third state of existence between the first, a formless and the second a world with all forms . This details of evolution, stasis and re-destruction to revolve cycle of the universe is explained in the metaphysics of the Ganesha for a seeker. Learn from a guru about this.
• Five elements of space, earth, water, fire, wind are your manifestations.
• Four type of sounds. Unmanifest sound of the seed of universe, sound of attitude and heart felt feelings-speech un spoken, Spoken part of the speech inside you, and the last the ‘speech’ manifested through all your senses. OM and Shrutis Vedas are from you.
• YOU are beyond all divinities on whose form all seekers meditate.
• YOU are manifest in the three basic natural qualities –‘gunas’ which reside in all esp. in the living beings.
• The first Satva quality-conscience, peity, self control, devotion, faith, service, all divine gunas.
• Rajas-extroverted, ambitious mind, which seeks achievements –position success-prosperity-wealth-beauty-tastes all of which when NOT acquired to ones wishes cause anger and resentment. Mind gets disturbed even when it gets or loses these goals .
• Tamas –A veil of ignorance covers mind and senses which guide us. Either laziness or improper actions result causing a demotion of mind and the soul.
• Ganesha helps you to balance these three in right quantity and at proper time to achieve results we want.
• You are present in all the three states of consciousness- awake, asleep and trance, you are the witness and the regulator of these states of our minds.
• You are not affected by the stages of the ‘body’, and its weaknesses-demands-needs which weakens the soul and prevents its enrichment. You are beyond them.
• You are beyond birth-death and time .Beyond past, present and future tense in description and existence.,
• You are the seed in yogic ‘muladhar chakra’ as OM.
• You are manifested in power of wisdom, information, & knowledge; in willpower and perseverance and in all abilities which are required for action.
• You are the ideal on whom all of us meditate with ease.
• You are the spiritual light the ‘pranava’ ,all pervading and all powerful guide to all in form of OM.
• OM gan ganpatayen namaha is the mantra ,power of words-incantation which you recite endlessly and meditate to experience its trance and results.
• You give us the power to meditate and see ‘light’.
• You are destroyer of those who follow the evil path or do harm to others by their actions, O Vakratunda!
• You prevent our downfall and push us towards good thoughts ,pure mind and actions as a Service to all.
• The mushak= a mouse as HIS vehicle symbolizes the function of the rat who eats away the stored worldly gains you store in the warehouse of mind and excess material wealth of our home itself. HE build our character and minds to withstand losses of our stored ‘valuables’. Such painful events strengthen our resolves and divert our minds to devotion to achieve divinity.
• We all pray to you easily pleased Gods of all Gods who never have asked for anything from anybody, but gives all to the devotee and the faithful
• This wisdom cannot be given to those who do not want self development and elevation of their souls. Give only to the ardent seekers of truth others may misuse it undeservingly.
• This wisdom has to be passed on to the seekers as a service to humanity without any expectation of name, fame, power or any form of gain. Repeat this prayer 1000 times but according to approved way ,respecting traditions. You will gain wisdom and erudite speech., prosperity, fame, peaceful mind and untimely unnatural death-destruction-obstacles and misfortune will keep away from you .
• Remember HIM in the algorithmic form which has a message-reminders in each of its details before you begin a action even in your minds. A stable, purposeful , unanxious ,focused ,devoted, well steered mind and body prepared by Ganesha will ensure the best results for your efforts. OM..
