I agree with your comments, about their hypocracy and many conservative remarks. We just cant digest these attitudes but if you look in their perspective, such attitudes are getting 'their job done' which changes from individual to individual but overall, it helps the community, to what extent that can be another issue to debate. For e.g. Iraq war, Bush managed its way, making US supreme power in the world, getting another testing ground for new weapons developed, giving opportunities to many many ameican companies to grow their business. So if I am a businessman in US, why would I oppose this war. Yes its costing few lives, but earth is loaded with too many people anyway so why would I care as long as my bottom is safe!!

Anybody agrees or not, religion has got enormous effect on population. So this is another way to keep people together. In recent past, we have started criticising our own customs and traditions from movies like knock knock, I want to marry or Hyderabad Blues etc. for e.g. but whats wrong in it, its a custom, you like it, follow else just shut the **** up, (at least such customs are not worth detesting as Sati or female infanticide) this is what these guys do. If they like it, think its best suited for them, they do it or just lock their tongue. Our open criticism gives these guys opportunity to make remarks on our system. For e.g. Sweden is seriously pondering over issue of banning scarves in public places but they conveniently forget at this moment that not so long, just 50 years ago, hardly any Swedish female used to use provocative clothes (which is common place and completely clad female is rare sight, except in winter) and would be seen without head scarf, they don't say a word about it. Pointing it to them reveals that the 'time has changed and you have to change with it' so the time has changed for them and they expect it to change for 'everyone' residing in country. This is hypocracy but it is good for Swedes as they want to have total control on the immigrant population who is breeding like rabbits at this moment and will outnumber native population in a decade so its very necessary for Swedes to change this new stock of human population to look similar as their own stock. In the bottom of the their heart, they find it very difficult to accept muslim immigrants getting assimilated in their society. So though tiny number of open swedes don't agree with this ban and respect rights to exercise religion, they don't say a word. Sleek and professional, job done...

We don't have such strong feeling in India but the result of it is recent Savarkar issue. If you have american mentality, you at least stick to it and talk 'in voice' and make your way, 'though you are wrong' in rest of the world's eye whereas by having Indian attitude, you can't even beat others in India or you can not voice any opinion. We cant agree on any opinion, you don't like any of your custom, you criticise it in open and tell the world how stupid your ancestors were, why so??? They were not stupid rather I must say that we are come from world's one of the finest stock, when the world was hunting around the jungle for food in almost naked condition, we were living in palaces and having finest life style, but NO, we criticise as we think that we are not as good as westerners and if someone supports some notion in society, like arranged marriage, we criticise openly, come up with movies like said above, forgeting conveniently about the negative side of western life style and give a change to these guys to ask us, how can you buy a car without a test-drive? We don't talk what represents our society, we talk as an individual but not as a nation or a society, we point out rare events of the society which otherwise would have gone un-noticed and give a change for the world to point fingers at us and this is exactly other side of the world doesn't do. I don't want to say its healthy mentality but again its individual preference. In my personal view,it DOES make sense to have such mentality.

Don't know if I could put it properly to make my view even after writing so much.

Holistic healing cannot be sold over the counter


There is nothing wrong with Ayurveda, a scientific, holistic medical discipline tried and tested over 5,000 years. But there is everything wrong with the misuse of Ayurveda. And this is precisely what has been happening in the US. Unlike allopathy which only suppresses the symptoms, Ayurveda actually heals the patient. However, this means that Ayurveda is not just medication, but an entire lifestyle. The patient is always treated on an individual basis. Each case is distinct from another, and prescriptions are tailor-made according to different body types. In fact, diet plays as important a role in the healing process as does the medicine. Merely swallowing pills without observing the other dos and don’ts associated with the course of medication can not only prove ineffective but also downright harmful. Unlike allopathic medicine, Ayurvedic formulations cannot be sold as overthe-counter non-prescription drugs.

As in the case of other eastern disciplines from spirituality to yoga, Ayurveda has suddenly become the flavour of the month in the West. While there are many genuine practitioners of Ayurveda in America, there are inevitably any number of quacks who are unscrupulously cashing in on the latest buzzword in alternative medicine. The fact that healthcare in the US is prohibitively costly — some 45 million Americans are said to be currently without any form of medical insurance — makes Ayurveda and other similar healing systems all the more attractive. It is also possible that in the West, Ayurvedic drugs are artificially and dangerously boosted by steroids and other chemical stimulants so as to appear to act faster to keep pace with allopathic medication. Such a cocktail of allopathy and traditional healing systems cannot be anything but disastrous. So don’t debunk Ayurveda. Instead, debunk the uninformed credulity with which people in the West are trying to seize Ayurveda as a miracle cure-all.

This is a conspiracy by big pharma companies


The success and acceptance of Ayurveda in the West has been a bitter pill to swallow for big pharma companies. A study done by the Harvard Medical School claims that many Ayurvedic medicines sold in the US contain dangerous levels of lead, mercury and arsenic. Articles and studies in mainline US media knocking alternative medicine in general and Ayurveda in particular have been surfacing recently. Clearly, powerful pharma companies whose interests are being hurt are behind this running down of Ayurveda. Over the last two decades, pharmaceutical companies enjoyed almost unbridled growth in the US. They came up tops till 2003 as the most profitable industry. Till 2000, these companies enjoyed profit margins which were four times that of an average Fortune 500 company. But growing cynicism with allopathic medicine, rapacious over-pricing and recent scandals involving some highly promoted drugs have made people turn away from them to alternative medicines.

Ayurveda, which is considered the oldest known medical system, is based on holistic treatment rather than merely treating the symptoms. Its formulations are well-documented and widely available. Ayurveda was studied extensively by people from China, Tibet, Egypt, Afghanistan, Persia and Rome. Its texts were translated into Arabic. However, drug companies which claim to have cures for all our ills withhold much information which should be in the public domain. Little is known about what kind of research goes into each drug that finally reaches the market. In the US, pharma companies can conduct any number of trials and pick and choose the results they want before forwarding them to the regulator. They don’t have to reveal any negative effects of the trials. Given the complete lack of transparency in the drug business and the high stakes involved, it isn’t surprising that big pharma companies will try to kill the growing interest in Ayurveda. This is how they hope to keep their bottomlines healthy.

The ifs and buts of history

Of late, there has been much controversy over the two-nation theory sparked off by Altaf Hussain. The MQM chief is reported to have asserted in India that this theory was invalid.

I have often disagreed strongly with the self-exiled leader, but find his secular, anti-feudal stance refreshing. So while many voices in the mainstream media have condemned some of his statements as inflammatory and even traitorous, they do merit serious examination.

Let us start with the basics: a theory is a working hypothesis until it is proved or disproved by experience and experiment in the field and in the laboratory.

In essence, the two-nation theory enunciated by the top Muslim League leadership as the ideological basis for the demand for Pakistan stated that as Muslims and Hindus were two different nations, they needed separate homelands.

Mr Jinnah is on record as saying that as the two communities spoke different languages, ate different food, had different customs, and, above all, followed different religions, they constituted two entirely different nations.

The outcome of this theory and the political and territorial demand that emanated from it was the creation of Pakistan. Obviously, history cannot be rewritten, but it is still useful to examine the theory and see whether it stands up to analysis based on the experience gained since it was first articulated.

I have been mulling over this theme over the last week while travelling around in South India. Here, I have met a number of Muslims, and in their patchy Hindi and English, they have made it clear that they are completely at home, and get on very well with their Hindu and Christian neighbours.

This morning, a Sunday, I was on a boat in the back waters of Kerala, and could see the minarets of a mosque among the coconut palms. But the sound I heard was the sound of bells from a nearby church. A day earlier, our group drove past a large Hindu congregation. And just in case some readers feel sorry for the Muslims of Kerala, let me remind them that the oldest continuous community of Muslims in the subcontinent live right here.

They have integrated seamlessly into the fabric of the area, and do not see their faith as an issue. Their Hindu and Christian neighbours visit them at Eid, just as they celebrate Holi and Christmas with their friends.

How can these different communities be separated? They speak the same language, are ethnically of the same stock, and while orthodox Hindus may be vegetarians, they cook in the identical, delicious Kerala style. Until you ask them directly, it is impossible to tell who is Hindu, who is Muslim and who is Christian.

This brings us to a fundamental question: what defines a person? Surely not religion alone, although it is an important factor. Education, upbringing, geography, class and genes are just a few of the ingredients making up the complex matrix that is a human being.

Invariably, where we grow up is largely a matter of chance. A universal genetic lottery determines the circumstances in which we grow up. We cannot help being born black, white or yellow, any more than we can decide the faith into which we are born. And once born, we often have little control over the future.

Since the whole business of life is so random, can we say that we are superior to anybody else? Or so different that we cannot live next to them? Because that, in essence, is what the two-nation theory is about.

It is clear that in his demand for Pakistan, Mr Jinnah never envisaged the mass transfer of populations partition would trigger. Indeed, he was deeply sickened by the death and destruction that accompanied the birth of Pakistan.

But as Ayesha Jalal demonstrates in her seminal book The Sole Spokesman, the demand for Pakistan was initially a bargaining position for Mr Jinnah. The fact that he accepted the Cabinet Mission Plan calling for a confederation as late as 1946 indicates that he was prepared for a compromise until the very last moment.

It was only after the Congress leadership dilly dallied and raised objections that positions hardened and the creation of Pakistan became inevitable. The whole question of separateness was raised a hundred years ago by the Muslim aristocracy when the British were planning local elections.

Fearing being swamped by a Hindu majority, they petitioned their British overlords into agreeing to holding elections under a system of separate electorates, with Muslims voting for their own candidates.

This was the beginning of communal politics in India, and led willy-nilly to the demand for, and creation of, Pakistan. So far, this has been a somewhat academic discussion of past events that cannot be changed. But what implications does the two-nation theory have for the future?

For me, the concept of being unable to live next door to somebody because he has a different faith, or language, or appearance is intolerant and bigoted. And if Muslims cannot live with Hindus one day, West Pakistanis will be unable to live with Bengalis the next day, and Sunnis will be unable to live with Shias the following day.

Where does this logic lead us? Clearly, the demand for Pakistan was based on the perceived need to protect Muslim interests in the face of a Hindu majority after the British left. But if no transfer of population was contemplated, surely not much thought was given to the plight of the Muslims of India once Pakistan had come into being. And if they have been at a disadvantage in certain parts of India - and, indeed, suffered violence in sporadic riots - our own aggressive policies must be partly to blame.

One demographic aspect we need to consider is that currently, the subcontinent has a combined Muslim population of half a billion out of a total of 1.5 billion. This is not a small minority to kick around.

However, it must not be forgotten that in an undivided India, the area that constitutes Pakistan today would have remained a backwater. Before 1947, it was the least developed part of the subcontinent, and it is doubtful that much of Sindh, Balochistan, the NWFP and southern Punjab would have received much attention and resources in a united India.

Now when we are critical of the slow progress we think we have made, we forget the vast physical infrastructure that has been put in place. The two-nation theory served its purpose and has brought about the creation of Pakistan. It is time we laid it to rest.

PLease remember...
All the Muslims living in India are not terrorists or antinationals.
Many have played significant roles in nation building. And one them, Dr. Abdul Kalam, is today the president of the country.Several of them have even laid their lives for the nation..
Same point the 'secular-minded' pakistani writer is making, and that is peaceful co-existance of different religions in every nation! I don't think he is talking about any "reunification" of the two nations.
