1. try to make Louvre museum trip in weekdays. It avoids the big queue. You can buy the tickets on the tube station. Nearest tube station : Opera on the red line.

2. You could watch Eiffel, instead of from its bottom, from the height of 1-2 floors. In front of the eiffel, there is a place called as Trocadero, academy of Arts and Music. Nearest tube station : Trocadero, on the green line.

3. If interested in good art, please visit, 'mussie morsie'. It is just opposite the Louvre museum and has a very nice collection of paintings of Van Gough and others.

4. Please do visit the Invalides. The body of Naepoleon is kept there.

5. The Palace of Versaille. The garden is beautiful.

6. Disneyland, if interested.

7. Do take a cruise in the Sine river. It has 36 over bridges and is a good tp.

As far as possible, stay in the central Paris. Otherwise, transportation may become a problem. Paris Metro is good and quite useful to travel around. The airport also, is out of the city.

it's good, and it is quite reputed in desi people here. These tour operators do offer more or less the same places and same hotels. So, if you are interested in going thru' Taj, go for it.

What is this Taj tour or Alliance tour? Where do you get info about these tours? What is the best reasonable place to stay other than the hostels? Have anybody stayed in the hostels in Paris or Geneva? Are the kids allowed in there? Could anybody let me know. We are also planning a trip in 4th week of July in Europe, France, Switzerland, Netherlands.

While going to india, we visited Paris and Switzerland last summer. We also took the Eurorail pass. Our trip was Paris (~ 3 days)-Lucern-Switzerland (~1 day) - Geneva- Switzerland(~ 2 days)-Paris (2 days)

I am a Rick Steves fan. It is worth visting his website
Rick Steves. We booked our Eurorail pass through him. There are several complicated options with Eurorail passes and make sure you understand those. If you have not seen his videos on PBS, most of them should be available for free in Local public libraries in US for most of European countries. We watched his video and it helped prepare my daughter and getting her exited about the trip. We liked the videos too and find useful. His guidebooks are worth the money (and you get a few free if you book Euroraill passes through him). His practical tips made our life easier and most of the suggestions are money saving. But those guidebooks are not with fancy color pictures so look at one in library or book shop before buying to make sure you are comfortable.
For Paris it is good to have some guidebook with you (if not Rick Steve's) because of options and choices possible.I looked at several well know guides but finaly chose the very simple rick steves guides.

Depending on how long you stay you may want to consider Paris Visite pass which is one ticket for unlimited train/bus rides on several types of trains including fast ones. If you don't buy this pass you should consider a "carnet" a set of 10 tickets at discount. From you hotel, get a free tourist map of Paris. The sooner you understand the transporation system and your location around the map the better.

I also strongly recommend Musees pass (Museum pass) for days you will be in Paris. It saves some money and saves you a lot of time. many Museums (like Louvre) has lines several hours long just to buy tickets in peek season. If you have the pass you can straight go inside. This benefit itself is worth the trouble to buy this pass. But if you don't have time (like only 1-1.5 days in paris) then this may not be worth it.
Also Before buying this pass make sure the museums you want to see are open on that day (All museums are NOT open all 7 days)

First day we saw Eiffel Tower, Second day Arc De triomphe, Champs Elysee. Champs Elysee war maaybolikarancha ek sammelan zala tenva aamhi tith hoto :). Tisrya diwashi versilles Palace (ravivari dupari summer madhe karnaji chalu astaat to baghayalach havi). Nantar Switzerland. Switzerlandhun aalaywar pudhache Museums Louvre, Rodin, Notre Dam, Nepoleans Toumb etc. Many people goto nepoleans monument but don't know about Rodin museum. If you like sculptures and remember famous ones like "Kiss" and "the Thinker", this is the museum to see it. We walked from Nepoleans Tomb to Rodin (about 20 minutes.) I always wanted to see this. maaybolikaranche ajun ek sammelan zale shevatchya diwash tithehi aamhi hajeri lawli :)

Look in tourist material in you lobby for two famous dept stores in Paris. On certain days of week they have fashion show in morning and if you go early you can get free tickets to fashion show. We went after 5 minute show started and still got free tickets and saw live fashion show in Paris !!

Arch, the hotel that we stayed at in Paris is
hotel Lyon-Mulhouse . This one was recommended on the usenet and rick steves's paris guidebook. it is a decent, clean place with large rooms (compared to european standards) at a reasonable rate. It is just 1 minute walk from Bastille metro station.

For domestic air, we travelled on easy jet airlines from London to Zurich and had a very good experience with them. But I am not sure if they fly to/from paris. I would also suggest to check Alitalia, they must be flying from Paris- Rome. I have also read that some small airlines offer cheap fares to Paris/ Rome, but the actual airport they use is not Charles De Gulle but some other airport which is 2 hours from Paris.

Another option is taking a night train from Paris to Rome, that way you save sightseeing time, lodging expenses and also have the experience of night tarin. We travelled from Zurich to Paris on the night train and it was very convenient. You can find the timetables at RailEurope website. Also make sure you book a bedroom/ crouchet for the night train when you buy the pass.

Ajay has already mentioned museum startegies. If you do not have a museum pass, then there is another way to save time for entering the Louvre. Rather than entering throught the glass pyramid, enter through the shopping mall which is underground in the Louvre building. It is much less crowded. For getting to the shopping mall, you need to get down at the Louvre- Rivoli metro station instead of "Palais royal musse-de-rivoli" metro station. The exit from the mtro takes you directly through the mall to Louvre entrance. Also, most museums in paris are closed on Tuesdays.

I too like Rick steves guides and shows. We extensively refered his "Europe through back door guidebook". Just 2 weeks back his recent "Travel skills" series was aired on PBS. If you buy passes through him, you get one guidebook free for EACH pass. But even if you are not buying the passes, his guidebooks are great reference and make a great reading. I liked his France, belgium and Netherlands guidebook too. But for Switzerland I prefer, Lonely Planet's Switzerland. Rick steves only covers the Best of Alps ( Interlaken, Bernese Oberland), and Best of medieval (Bern) in his guidebook. But if you want to travel extensively in Switzerland, his book falls short.

I have not been to Italy, so can not recommend any particular guidebook to Rome. But IMO, Italy is THE country that rick steves covers most entensively. So his guide should be useful. Also, last summer we had some discussions on hitguj about travel in Italy. They will be useful as well.

So happy planning for your trip. I am sure you will also enjoy the planning part, at least I did!

When I went to Paris for the first time, my boss at that time - who had lived in Paris and other Eurpean cities as well gave me this advice -

In every country in the world, you can get somethings which are expensive in other countries. Only France and especially Paris are an Exception to this rule.

Having been there several times since then, I totally agree with him.
Buy something because you like it, but don't even kid yourself that you can find a bargain. This is especially true for Wines, cheeses, clothes, shoes and perfumes.

Khuli,
Visite pass you can use it on all (well alomost all, not high speed)local trains and buses. Carnet is valid only on trains( I may be wrong here. But you need additional ticket on bus since you get out of metro station). If you just go to a place, spend a day and return, carnet may be better. But if you goto to several places then Visite pass is much better. carnet is nothing but 10 tickets. 1 ticket, each way.
I have tried both options and finally felt the money you save in carnet is not worth it (or you really don't save it if you like to roam around). I personally liked the flexibility of visite pass to make last minute decisions, get down anywhere and start anywhere to enjoy the paris. I like to keep some part of trip unplanned and many times the best things you see are the unplanned ones
