which brings to mind the usefulness of getting leftovers from a restaurant meal "to go" that is prevalent here in the US. as far as i can remember, this never existed in india!!

Abedekar, In India, I guess, we leave the left over for other hungry poor people, as a gesture of sympathy for them, hoping, that's what the restaurant people will do (and not 'recycle'). Here, that's not the custom. What if the food is given to a poor homeless hungry man, and he is allergic to it, and gets sick and sues everybody? In my opinion, the fear of lawsuits has by far suppressed most of the charitable, noble acts in this country. You may have heard about the 'good samaritan' case, where in a road accident, a doctor who was passing by, helped the man in the accident to get to the hospital. Later, the man's wife sued that doctor for malpractice stating he mishandled the man. After a lot of anguish, after spending a lot of money and time and suffering some bad publicity, the doctor came out clean, but I don't think many doctors would bother to be 'good samaritans' any more!

The system of taking left-overs with you exists in India also in most of the good restaurants. Only thing is most of us don't like to use that system, may be because we don't care about it. Anyway, Swapna, mala tari ase watate ki ann vaya jawu naye mhaNun ugachach poTawar bandhun gheNyapeksha, uralele ann pack karun ghari ghewun jaNe kenvhahi bare. It is better health-wise too. aNi ugachach poTawar bandhalele ann paN tasehi kharetar vayach gelyasarakhe asate.
BTW, I have heard this somewhere that some of the restaurants gives the left-overs which are in good condition in properly packed form to the charitable places where old/poor people stay. Anybody know about it ? (Sorry for out of topis'c context messege).

zakki: the leftover food that i am referring to is not leftovers from the kitchen, im referring to leftovers from food already served. and the issue of giving that to charity does not arise - either the guy who ordered it takes it "to go" or else the restaurant owner "trashes" it. there cannot be any other case.
ajitv: the system of taking leftovers "to go" may now be more common in india than i thought, but im pretty sure it is a very underutilized one.
dharmadhikari: i am not sure if you are making fun of the desi wife - if you are, i dont think its funny ... not everyone is familiar with the system/language/accents here in the states and for newcomers, the "for here or to go" question is often not as intuitively obvious in its meaning as it may be for you
