I have Olympus D560z. Its a very nice camera. Takes very crisp photos. Colors are always natural. I also used to have D510z. 560 is just a little slow in focusing than 510 but ofcourse has many advanced features. 560 uses xD card which holds a whole lot more [and costs more too] than other memory types. My cam came with 16MB card which can hold around 100 shots of 1024x768 resolution, which i think is quite cool. battery life for 560 is OK. it takes two lithium ion cells per 100 shots with LCD on all the time. I would suggest a tripod as sometimes [if you have it on auto] shutter is very slow even when you think there is enough light around.

Some help/tips would be appreciated..... Not a photographer, neither have hobby of serious photography but certainly likes to take snaps when on tour/vacation/events/etc. Which Digital Camera with good resolution/zoom/memory/etc is a "GOOD" buy? Thx in advance...

are you asking for what to look for? - resolution (try to go for atleast 3MP) - zoom (atleast 3X optical zoom) - in addition to standard features such as various modes (landscape, nightshot, noise reduction for low light exposures, exposure compensation, white balance adjustments, film speeds etc.), check for things like shutter priority/aperture priority modes, manual modes (shutter speed range) - battery life, type, chargers etc. all of these are features available in good point and shoot digital cameras ... im sure prashantkhapane or maverick might have more input. check here or here for the Sony DSC-V1 - excellent reviews (even consumer reports has a good rating). currently at a very good price IMO (for this camera)

Chafa: If you can add $100/- to your budget then as of now two "Point & shoot" cameras with awesome features and full manual controls are available in the market..... 1. Pentax 750z 2. Olympus C 7000 Check them out..... I personally liked Olympus C 7000 in terms of image quality and its exceptional "live real life" histogram feature which is not available in any of the P&S cameras. Both cameras are 7MPixel & 5x optical zoom with ton of functionality and "full" manual control. 3. Canon sd300 - Ultra compact camera although lacks in manual control. 4. Canon A95 - It has lot of vignetting (dark corners) & redeye effect Well, I would suggest to go for newer models in the range of $300-450, you will find lot of variety and ofcourse plenty of MPixel/Optical zoom/manual control and above all better image quality/processing. Check professional reviews on following sites along with Camera forums on those sites for user reviews: 1. DCResources 2. Imaging Resources 3. Steves Digicams Also if you can wait to till Jan then do so as the prices will fall after Xmas season. Instead of buying from a store check it on net, you might end up getting much better deals.... I hope this helps....

in general, i believe sony point and shoot cameras will give a superior performance as compared to their counterparts from other brands - perhaps making it worth the extra cost. but there is also the added issue of more expensive memory stick media, as compared to a compact flash card. a lot of the sony cameras (esp the dsc-v1, dsc-w1 etc. and higher) have karl zeiss lenses, these willgive a very good performance in general.

Abe: I have read on lot of user forums, compare sony lenses with canon or panasonic, it does not stand out of the lot.... and with added cost of memory stick + camera drawbacks does not make it worth the extra price!

Some high end digital SLRs like EOS-1D Mark 2 come with wireless transmitters for transferring images directly to a server. But these cameras are very expensive.. in $6000 to $8000 range, probably meant for professional usage

I've read this BB, some of the posts are pretty old of yr 2001 and some are new which is very useful. I think, in another one month of time, I will have my own Digital Camera. But I am still not sure shall I purchase Digital Still Camera or HandyCam. Y'day I visited SONY House here in Singapore & the girl provided me good information. But when I stepped out, I saw some tourist have Canon's Digital Camera with nice looks & good features ( .. both of camera & poeple too ). The girl has also told me, only Canon is our competitor. Is it true? She said, CANON have their own lens manufacturing while we purchase it from CARL ZEISS VARIO-SONNAR T* (.. I think some German Company). Now I know that Resolution, Optical Zooming, size of Memory stick are very imp features. Anything else which I'm missing? Some of the camera's with good features do not provide good size of memory stick. So, u've to spend extra money in purchasing the new memory. But actually, u use only one. Generally, how much one should have? Video shooting is a very memory hungry feature. I saw, the price diff between good camera & best camera is not much substancial. SONY is having installment option so paying 50 Singapore $ per month is not costly, that too with zero intrest rate. So, I'm thinking to buy camera with latest features. After reading this BB I got to know one imp factor, how is the quality of print on paper. I can see the pics on my laptop but for sending home, I've to print it. How is the pic quality of 6-8 Mega Pixel resolution? Has anybody tried shooting with SONY as well as CANON camera? is there a major diff? Does CANON provided plug & play device when u connect to ur PC? Is the port is USB? Whats this SLR? I've seen Handycams are not much compact as compared to Digital Camera. I am looking out for pocket sized camera. After purchasing the cam, how do u guys know using it, is it difficult? U know, most of the time ur pics is taken by somebody else when u go for site seeing or some office tour. Then if the person who takes ur pics does not privide enough attention, then all ur features of camera has gone. This happened many times with my pics that most of the touriest are so busy that they take ur photo within a sec. Do u need to purchase some s/w to see the pics on ur PC? which one is the best? Does it come with Camera? When u save the files on ur PC, whats the file type-- is it JPG, GIF, JPEG (or txt ) ? The image displayed on LCD (.. the screen of camera), is the pic look same after clicking? Few camera's are with internal zooming, u just to press plus-minus horizontal bar on top of camera. Has anybody tested this feature? any disadvantages? Thx in advance for reading me, replying me & spending ur valuable time

Bee, I have Minolta Dimage S414 4MP Digital Camera w/ 4x Optical Zoom and Sony DCR-DVD201 DVD Handycam Camcorder w/10x Optical Zoom. Both have distint usage (still photography vs live recording). both camera and camcorder are not pocket size but not bulky either. So far, the results have been great. SLR (single lens reflex) is feature of camera lens whereby same lens is used for composing and capturing the image (WYSIWYG). digicam comes with LCD screen where you can review any picture you take. that way, you can trouble multiple people to take your pictures until you are happy with result. although, due to small screen size 2.5/3/3.5 etc, it will be bit hard to figure out whether the "tourist" was able to capture your beauty(?) in the picture. digicams can store pictures in jpg(jpeg) and many more formats.
