converting the divx into a vcd or svcd is an extremely painful task - its a pretty slow process. the divx has very good compression, but ofcourse its an avi - not an mpeg, so a dvd player cant read it. so i normally bypass that requirement by merely getting the laptop from work - that has a video card with a tv-out that can be connected directly to the tv with an s-video cable. just play it on the laptop and output video and audio to the TV. its much easier that way, and all you need is a couple of cables (video and audio) and ofcourse, a laptop!! resolution is not compromised.

have got several 100 gigs of moview so far on divx - had to delete several 100gigs for lack of disc space - deleted all the sidey ones

Make sure that you have ample amount og hard disk available as no of temp files created are large and huge in size as well.

asami be right - the files can be of the order of gigabytes. the process squeezes all available system resources ....

i'd recommend people notto get into decompressing divx - its just NOT worth the effort

i have successfully converted divx movies into VCDs using nero burning rom and the process was pretty simple and did not take more than an hour or so. The only additional requirement was to have a CD of 800MB capacity, which is just marginally costly than a normal CD..

Some Daewoo models use to be popular for multi-voltage and region free...

Infact most Daewoo use to be that way. And many people took them to India

As far as my knowledge goes, almost all players are multi-voltage. Check on vcdhelp.com for player details.

My personal suggestion is not to carry any DVD player from US to India because average lifespan of a DVD player or any technology nowadays is not more than 5 years and we get quite decent DVD players in India, unless you would like to buy that high-end Panasonic model for USD 500 but then you need to have really decent TV which is not the case yet in India..

I would just buy Sony DVP NC66K for INR 10000. If this is expensive then there are cheaper models from Onida etc are available. (in fact this is expensive compared to what we get in the west. I got really good DVD player for 500 kroners)

One correction. Apex and Daewoo models sell between 35 and 50$ in USA

it's easier tnd cheaper to buy "branded" dvd players in India which support multiple formats and specifically regions than in US
