Western Style Indian Musical !

We are happy to let you know that the musical I am participating in is coming together and we will open on March 4th, 2007 at Baldwin Park Civic Auditorium in Baldwin Park. It will be presented as a fund raising event to adopt a village in Maharashtra. I would like to give you both concepts in a nutshell.

The Show: It is probably the first of a kind western style musical in Marathi language. Globalization signifies the collapse of not just geographical and time boundaries but cultural boundaries too. We believe that Indians as well as Americans will enjoy the blend of Indian and Western musical compositions. We will be presenting the story of a literally illiterate farming woman BahinaBai Choudhary from Asoda, Jalgaon, Maharashtra, born in 1879, who composed the most profound poetry of any time. The message is simple. A life filled with love, compassion, courage, honor and dignity is a life worth living. Humor and music are the icing on this cake! It highlights the goodness of human heart, the beauty of human spirit and the greatness of human soul, as depicted in her poetry.

Adopt A Village, Inc.: The goal is to adopt and develop the second Indian village in its entirety by providing financial support, so eventually it will become self sufficient. We adopted the first village in 2000 by raising funds from another musical. The transformation that can be achieved with just a little bit of help is almost magical. The organization that we are working with is well established for over 50 years. They have a vision, a plan and a pool of dedicated workers, but are struggling to maximize their potential due to lack of financial support. Basically, the money will be used for setting up schools and promoting literacy, teaching scientific agricultural techniques, digging wells, building toilets, creating awareness about global warming, teaching modern banking, stressing the importance of family planning and basic vaccinations.

The motto of the cultural wing of this project is living for art and art for living. There is a Chinese story. A guy who is starving to death, finds some work and earns two pennies. He spends one on food and one on a rose. Considering how famished he is the florist wonders why he doesn’t spend both pennies on food. He replies: I have to eat to keep myself alive, but the rose teaches me what to live for. One without the other is meaningless!

I would like to extend a heartfelt invitation to you and anyone else you might think will enjoy, to attend the show. We promise you a delightful evening. A generous sponsorship or attendance from you will go a very very long way in bringing hope to those who are asking for opportunity, not for charity.
