boss,
what you say is right about 2 contracts. but the amazon contract is only for 6 months.
only after 120 days, you can send the mail in rebate form to amazon. and it should reach them before 180 days. if you are with the cingular for 180 days, they will send the 100$ check. you are liable only to keep the cingular contract for 180 days, for amazon rebate. if you break the service before 180 days, they will not give 100$ (of course), but will deduct 250 $ from your credit card (as cost of the phone) that u used while buying the phone. so on safer side, break it after u encash the 100$ rebate check :-)

2nd contract is with cingular for 2 yrs and if u break it, 175$ will be charged.

any phone from cingular, prepaid or postpaid, cingular will unlock it after 90 days. (by providing u the unlock code on mail.)

bittu, what u say is not right. after unlocking u get all features as like normal phone. that is what I read on internet at various sites.
for sony, u can also try free firmware upgrade from sony site.

Savya: "2nd contract is with cingular for 2 yrs and if u break it, 175$ will be charged." <<<

Can you please provide specific details in regards to this? As of my knowledge and research, I believe that no matter from where u buy the phone u make 2 yr contract ONLY with Cingular. The condition imposed by other site like Amazon or wirefly is that u need to keep the phone active for atleast 180 days (6 months). Once u fulfill that requirement, u r only liable for the 2yr contract with Cingular on breaking of which u will need to pay $175/-

Bittu: Can you please provide more details on phones specific hardware for each provider!!! I doubt this is the case. Usually phones r NOT hardware specific dependent on the provider instead the phone is "locked down" (software functionality is locked down) as per the provider and hence u require unlock code.

yogi what u said is the exact point. so there is nothing to elaborate more I guess.
but still,

>>As of my knowledge and research, I believe that no matter from where u buy the phone u make 2 yr contract ONLY with Cingular

yes that is. 2 yrs with cingular is always
there. that is 2nd contract I talked about.
if u break, 175$ will be charged. (P.S. cingular does not give any 100$ MIR. like amazon. its just phone is free.)

>>The condition imposed by other site like Amazon or wirefly is that u need to keep the phone active for atleast 180 days

yes that is first contract I said, with amazon. u call it condition or contract. amazon gives u the phone free and plus 100$ mail in rebate. and so is that condition. to remain active means, u must use the cingular service (that phone number), for atleast 180 days. if u dont, they will deduct 250$ for the phone given to u and will not give 100$ MIR. (where as, if u buy phone and service directly from cingular, u will have to pay only 175$ for breaking service.)

hope that helps.

p.s. I have taken w810 from amazon and had read the conditions meticulously and that is what I have stated up here. but I have not gone through whole process yet as I have to complete 180 days. if u take amazon visa card, u will get 30$ more as credit to ur card. I got it.

Savya:
Its Cingular $100/- visa rebate card...

So you will get the visa rebate card from Cingular but the time length to receive the rebate itself is 4-6 months during that time frame one needs to keep the account active.

Here is the current advertised rebate on Amazon website from Cingular...

I hope this should clarify the confusion. Sometime back Amazon did have their own rebate attached with this phone but not anymore.

What bittu is saying is partially right..Lot of cellphone carriers get the customized phones from Manufacturer. Like dedicated buttons to access internet, or some features installed are very operator specific like Fav5 from T mobile. So if you unlock the phone you can use it to Make and receive calls, but FAV 5 feature will be useless. Also some operators make some settings hard coded like IP Server ID and IP address to access internet on phone. As it is hardcoded you cannot change it. So if you plan to use the phone for other providers you can not use it to access the internet or send MMS, if it is hardcoded etc.

We calleed it as 2ndary agreement. It is to safegaurd the Dealers. 'cause if you cancel your phone service before six months; the commission given to dealer gets charge back. So Dealer loses that commission as well as phone which cost @$250 or more. You can think this as " cअत्च " but due to some BAD customers, Dealer has to put this agreement.

Only some agent/dealer does it without informing the customer. THAT IS BAD.

Otherwise, you can activate the phone from the corporate stores than Dealers. But then again it is CHEATING by consumer to the service provider.

When a phone gets activated on a line, it takes atleast 18 months for company to earn shear profit on that line and that's why the 2 yr Agreement is asked to sign with customer.

@ UNLOCK: It is easy to unlock GSM phomes like CINGULAR or T-MOBILE. than the phone service that works on CDMA Technology. There are so many web sites available that sale UNLOCKED GSM phones with no contract. Even on ebay you can find this kind of deals.

there is some pt to be cleared Yogi.
I forgot to mention that, the offers vary for zip codes. you have provided link with your zip. I am in 08817 zip. If you go on amazon.com and use this zip, u will still see the $100 MIR. It is upto 2nd June. but what you say is right. that it is a cingular visa card of 100$ as MIR. but it is still given by amazon because u purchased phone from amazon, and not from cingular . If you go directly on cingular site, u will not find this MIR. Also, on amazon's site itself, it does show other buying choices and in that, it shows wirefly too. wirefly have some other MIR. but shows the phone value as 99 and MIR as 100. so in all its 0 in the end. From Amazon, you are in plus 100. (I hope :-))
I guess u can use the visa card for any purchases with few exceptions like automated gas stations etc. mbhure has given very good idea about the 250$ charge. So after all, its amazon's charge. not cingular's.

someone on puekar bb said that he got his ATT phone unlocked. I have received a mail to unclock my ATT phone. but its very first step itself is put some non ATT SIM card in the phone !
can someone throw a light here? do you really need to put such other network SIM to unlock it?

Yes.. It's necessary to put that card in. Any old sim-card works. In the worst case, borrow a good one from your not ATT friends.

I flashed my K750, 810I many times. ( Changed the firmware) you have to download Sony utilitiy for firmware upgrade. Once done that utility guide you but you have to use the USB cables not bluetooth for flash.

I have not noticed any cons, pros - battery life was good after flashing k750.
Also go to Esato.com and search for 810 forums, you will get lot of info there.

thanks kedar. I read about some sites like davinci.com and xyzserver or something, which are paid sites. so I was confused. I guess the flash software should be available on sony's site. did you get it from there for ur 810?
I will check esato.com.
btw, pros are, u can use any mp3 as ringtone, u can set up ur own shortcuts and some other small things.
thats why I am thinking of flash.

For mp3 you need not flash. I can use any mp3 as ringtone without updating the firmware. I flashed it because I unlocked Cingular 810i in India ( with 50 Rs), so I thought lets flash it with the udated firmware. For my k750, I bought it from Hongkong and it had chiniese version so I have to flash it to English and I use both of them with cingular /ATT without any problem.

( I am still waiting on any confirm news of Iphone flashing, once its done I would buy that one).

Do not go to any other website. Go to Sony phones support you will get all the new firmwares there.
