i have seen the website of the witch museum in salem. but this play or even the historians of withtrials say that it had nothing to do with witchcraft, it was a kind of mass histeria. the play says that its vengance. I think that is more valid argument over it. Ofcourse the viccan religion has lot of liturature and websites devoted to all kinds of witchcraft etc.

The history books say that many women were active in midwifery / medicine. When medical men entered as an organised institution, they didn't want competition from these women. so they tried to discredit and eliminate them.

of course, there are many other theories. there is a book which even claims that it has been due to meningitis epidemic. others point to the hightened sense of guilt in puritan women etc. most of the legal trial books available show that men & women were coerced to confess. Even a 4 yr old girl was accused & imprisoned along with her mother. It must surely be a scary period to live in.
