HELP !! Calling all Marathi computer programers on hitguj..
Anybody interested in a project to make it easy to write marathi, both here in hitguj and in general?
As you know, it takes a long time to type in any marathi font (including Shivaji) and it is much easier to write in romanized (transliterated) marathi: "mhaNaje ase".
we need a tool
- Which is free (public domain) and works on all operating system
- Not dependant on a particular font and easier to map to different one.
- Accepts input in itrans (romanized transliteration)
- Possibly shows in realtime as you type
- Open source so more plugins, hooks to different program can be added
- Multiuser but should not put lot of load on server or require server space.

Please write here if you are interested.

The closest thing that comes to mind is "jtrans". But it has few drawbacks. But can be easily modified to what we want. But it is copyrighted code !!

requisites:
Wilingness to make your code open, free to everybody
Knowledge of html, javascript

Write here if you are interested.
Even if you can't program but have ideas about what the tool should do, feel free to write here. Afterall the tool should be easy so that a new person to computers should be able to use it.

Admin :

What a great Idea ?!I have been impressed with Iwrite32, but it works only in 32 bit MS Windows
environment.

I know very little html - as is evident from my minuscle home page, but I do know some amount of java and would be VERY interested in writing something - that will run on all platforms.

On a very high level, I think this is what is needed.

- a structure for a map file for each of the different fonts - shivaji01, dev-surekh and so on.

You will also need some sort of built-in capability to search and recognize the marathi fonts available on the desktop.

- a user interface that is split into two areas , one that is editable and user types using itrans convention and the other that displays real time conversion.

- Some basic text processing ability such as paragraph/line break controls, wrapping text, responding to cut-copy-paste commands - in essence a 'Windows Wordpad' like features.

- capability to save both the files to whatever operating system it is running on.

- easy to use feature to view/edit and create new map files, that is not at all like assembly code. A point and click, drag-drop kind of interface would be really cool.

I am writing this as if I am thinking aloud, so if this sounds incoherent, please attribute it to my excitement about the project.

I look forward to hearing from other people on this one.

Thanks Admin for your efforts of going beyond your duty of maintaining the site. For almost last one month even before I downloaded Shivaji I was thinking about this. The reason being here in Saudi I have on my PC arabic fonts and the keyboard is also mapped to it.Secondly after trying writing in marathi with Shivaji I found it very difficult and switched again to romanised marathi.Well for the time being I can only assure that i will discuss this with all my IT colleagues and try to find out possible solution.
and shonoo excitement can lead to invention-ask Bill.

3rd May 1999.
Dear Admin,

As informed I give herebelow how we can achieve a real-time typing in Marathi (Devnagri) on the message board,

1. I give herebelow the charters mapped to specific words.

2. We will have to write a Java applet, which will make it platform independent, which once selected to write a message would run. Then we type message in romanised marathi which the applet as the cursor moves convert into Marathi.
3. The applet itself-i.e. the program will contain set of rules applied like e.g.
When I write naivana in marathi and see the same under any english font it appears as " naivana" and if I right \shivaji01 { navaIna } it appears as navaIna because the characters are mapped such. So to overcome this the following set of "barakhadi" will explain how we can match romanised marathi and convert it into marathi.
A Aa [ [ - ] e eo Aao AaO AM A:
a aa e ee u oo "x"e ai o auo am ah
k K ga Ga = ca C ja Ja Ha
ka kha ga gha dna cha chha ja jha nya
t qa d Qa na p f ba Ba ma
ta tha da dha na pa pha ba bha ma
T z D Z Na ya r la va Sa
tta thha dda dhha nna ya ra la va sha
Ya sa h L xa & Ea ~ ; ) ? {
sha sa ha lla ksha dnya shra tra lru hru hru ttha
Thus once these rules are written into the program when I write those words it will replace them into marathi without gramatical errors. However some exceptions also will have to be addressed like e.g.
Jemvha mala naniv -artha nave wa nutan lihaychey temvha me define kelelya character set pramane mala,
na iva na he na vi na ase and not na vi n lihave lagel So again some rule will have to be developed like last character with space should be treated as character followed by "a" and space.

I hope you follow what have written.
This is just an Idea and the test java script is under development. Also it will take time to check the common words and devise a proper logic which will ensure proper meaningful words.
Sandeep.

There is no need to create new rules, since itrans already have created those rules nicely. All we need is just to reuse those rules.

I think admin said "javascript" (one word) and not the script/applet written in language java.
Javascript (also known something like ECMA script) has nothing to with java technically.

I personally would not prefer java because
1. Not all browsers support java 1.1 yet.
2. The implementation of java virtual machine is different on each os creating some performance issues.
3. It takes too long to download. Sometimes applet don't work etc.
4. You will need additional code to support cut+paste increasing code size.

I think javascript is a better solution and is the language "jtrans" is written.

It will be good if we merge what iwrite32 and jtrans provide. That will be our solution. There is no need to reinvent the wheel from scratch

Hi,
I am interested in this project. I have some knowledge of html & javascript.
I had seen some kind of chinese script writing sites. In those sites they export the images to the client side. Can we do such thing? we can have a typewriter(made up of buttons) on the top of the page. one can import the images from server side by clicking the buttons. There can be other option of making one image using all images.
(similar to grab) Unix has a command which will make a image by concatination(i forgot the command name).
If i'm wrong anywhere pl. correct.

Hi everybody here.........

I was very impressed to C lot of potential we ppl have.........I mean, I read all the above articles n ideas.........was very happy to know that so many ppl r willing to contribute n trying to help.

While reading all of the above ideas.....one thing was common which I felt very strongly. Everybody over the internet seems to have been used to write in "romanized marathi"......(i.e Kaasa aahes!!!)

Just as a thought to this......if we come up we a software which converts romanized marathi into actual marathi language using marathi fonts...........Wont it solve the entire problem.....?????? I do agree that conversion wont be easy but then we can have a list of common words in a Database.......??????

One idea,
Actually as most of us have reviewed the IWrite32
software and liked the mapping idea. To start with
I'd like to keep first target of the project
to develop a set of functions in the form of dll
which will translate from 'minglish' to marathi
using map files.
This will be a versatile dll which can be
plugged into any project thereafter.

I have another idea which will require a good
number of efforts:
marathi chat specially for maayboli.
i.e. using the above dll one can type in
normal minglish only whereas the other party
will get to see the converted marathi text.
This will require skills such as socket
and java programming.

Hi,
You all know that Indian languages require
three layers to write.("Kana","Ukar" etc.)
There was a article in "Maharashtra Times"
on how to write Devnagri Lipi in one layer.
If you can please go through it.

Hi Friends,
Here is very good example for all of maaybolikars .
If we want to see what the indian language site, please visit the
http://www.webdunia.com
This site features the hindi fonts which you don't have to download that means they are using the dynamic fonts . We can do something like this for maayboli . I am ready to contribute some time for this.(I am programmer working in Hongkong with lots of free time and high speed internet connection from Office).

I really wonder how many takers there will be for such clown tricks.

After all, who will need it and who will like to clutter their screens with such vernacular stuff? - especially when one can proudly communicate in English with considerable success?

It is better to start some project to teach people smart English communication; which has more market value!!

what mozilla has not just a browser but GUI engine as well that can be basis of several applications.
The fact is several people still can't read/write english in maharashtra ( i am talking about mainstream and not just cities) and this will help to take technology to masses.
In case you don't know there are marathi pagers, which are quite popular. The point I am trying to make is if you make it technology easier for them to use, it will be more accepted.
And offcourse there are people who don't value everything by market value. Some of them succeed and some fail.

I am looking for logic, algorithm, pseudo code or (even source code !) for developing Dictionary, Thesaursus, Grammer check for Marathi.

I dream to develop a Marathi expert system for literary and research use.

I could be wrong in even stating my ideas here but that is how they are now.

Any pointers are helpful.
I did try Google and source forge.
