Here is some basic information about marathi website development. (Go ahead and laugh at me as I am writing this is english :). I do plan to write marathi translation. )
- choose a free webhost and first create a website in english. Become familiar with using different english fonts like arial, veradana, helvetica etc. See that your browser shows those differnt fonts correctly.Play with font "face", "size" tags.It will be very painful to you if you try to create a marathi website before knowing how to create an english one !
- Make sure you can write in devnagri fonts in common wordprocessors like word or in email to become familiar with how to type all characters. This is important otherwise you won't know the problem is with your html or you just don't know how to type a particular character.
Basically the problem is character mapping of devnagri is required in both server and browser and need to be same. The problem is complicated by font developers as each of them have come with their own map. So "Ma" will not always map to same character on keyboard. So it is important that both server and site has same font (mapping) and any marathi font on server will NOT work with any other marathi font on browser.
Now there are four ways you can show marathi on your website.
1. Show marathi as images: You install the font on your local machine. Use a graphics package to create an image. Upload this image to server and reference it appropriatly in your code just like a photograph is referenced. If you are not familiar with what I am saying here, you will need to practice with english website more.:)
Advantage:
-The most basic method and is guaranteed to work in all graphics browser and all operating systems
-The user does not need to download any font. It is very easy for them to read in marathi.
Disadvantage:
- Most time consuming and painful
- Takes more space on server and may need more download time
-Does not work in text browsers like linx
2. Use the font directly using font tag :
Create the text in your favourite word processor using the font you like. Create HTML with font face value referencing this font. Make font available for download so visitors can install it.
Advantage:
- Simple method. Makes life of web developer easier.
- Faster downloads. Takes less space.
- Can work in all browsers both text and graphics
- You don't even need to keep the font available on server if it is available for users to download some place else. for example you can use shivaji and ask visitors to download from bharatbhasha.org
Disadvantage:
- You need to make font available for download for each operating system : windows, unix, Mac etc
-You are basically giving your fonts free to your visitors. Can create Major copyright problems if the font was not licensed for download/distribution for free by the font creator. Many font creators are reallizing this and now making available one or two fonts for distribution.
- Hassle for visitors as they have to install a new font for each website they visit. Many do not know how.
-3. Use embedded or dynamic fonts: You create a webpage like 2 above but also add some extra tags in the page so the font (or read only version of font} is installed automatically a visitor visits your website.
Advantage:
-very easy for visitors as they don't have to install a font.
- No problem with copyright. Although the fonts get downloaded to visitor's browser they can't use it outside your site. So if you purchased a license for any font (even though is not for distribution) you can still use it as nobody can use outside your site.
Disadvantage:
-Not supported in all browsers. Text browsers like lynx can't see the page. Even for graphical browsers this is available for 4+x browsers only.
- Two competing standards : Truedoc (netscape-bitstream) and EFT (microsoft-adobe} Till recently one won't work with other's browsers. So you will need to apply both technologies in your work. Bitstream has released a ASP control for IE which eases this.
- Not a technology for novice. Don't try this till you get 2 above working.
Use unicode: Code in unicode.
Advantage:
-No need for fancy technology, or font download. -Works just like you type english
- Universal standard. So all fonts have same mapping and even if you don't have a particular font you are guaranteed to see the text.
-This is the future of language on computers.
Disadvantge:
-The biggest disadvantage is, it is available on new computers (OS) only. So there are so many old computers out there, which do not have this. Not yet available for may version of operating system. It will take some "years" before this catches.
- Tools to develop this are just getting available and not mature.
My personal suggestion: Start with 1. Try 2 and then 3 for sample pages and then decide which one you want to go for all web pages on your site.

I personally would suggest option 2. This is very easy for the developer & a one time job for the user (to download the font). But now-a-days most of the users do have all these fonts downloaded and installed on their pc. Problem would arise only if u r surfing from a public place like library where u r restricted to any downloads.
But before jumping into option 2, try what Ajay says. Create webpages in english using various fonts and then switch to marathi fonts.

2. I Select Run from the Current location
3. It opens another browser window with heading as d.i.s.h.a.a. and the entire page is blank

I am looking into this. However I do not have 98 and IE 5 near me.
In the meanwhile will you do something?
1. Try this on some other machine and see if the same result is reproduced?
2. When you are asked about save or run from location, try to save it on your disk and start it by double clicking on it after saving. It will still tell you that it will run from internet location. Say okay to that.
3. When you see such blank window, right click inside and try to refresh. Just try.
4. Open MSDos shell window (command prompt) and enter following command:
mshta http://velankar.hypermart.net/xedit/index.hta
I assume that mshta.exe is in your path. If not, search for it and go there and give this command.
(On my NT machine it is at c:\WINNT\System32\mshta.exe )
*.hta are html applications and mshta.exe is the program which manages them thro the browser.
