What information do you need? If you are in India, you can get it notarized from any Notary. If you are abroad, any Indian consulate should be able to attest it for you. Infact, its a requirement for some establishments. e.g. HDFC needs the POA notarized by Indian consulate if its issued abroad.

Actually, the Indian Cosulate is the only authority to notarize a POA. You have to appear personally with your Indian Password, photographs and $25. If you have a US passport, they will do it (but not stamp the attached Photograph).....

The document then has to be sent to India where it needs to be stamped. (There is a special name for this).

Now, there is an addtional process called Adjucation required in India for POA made abroad, which takes about a month , I was told.

THE POA FOR INDIAN PROPERTY HAS TO BE ATTESTED BY THE INDIAN CONSULATE. THE AMERICAN NOTERY OR AN AMERICAN BANK HAVE NO VALUE IN INDIA. THE ONLY AUTHORITY THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT RECOGNIZES IS THE INDIAN CONSULATE.
THE PAPER DOES NOT MATTER BUT USE THE INDIAN SIZE (LEGAL) AND LEAVE THE TOP 2/3 SPACE ON THE FIRST PAGE, FOR REGISRATION. ONCE YOU SIGN IT IN FRONT OF THE IND. CON, THEY WILL PUT THEIR STAMP. THEN SEND IT TO INDIA. THERE THE REGISTRATION TAKE PLACE (STAMPING FOR THE VALUE). THIS IS NOW DONE IN SOME BANKS IN INDIA. CAN BE DONE IN A DAY.
THEN COMES ADJUCATION, FOR WHICH THE PERSON WITH POWER (YOUR DAD) HAS TO SIGN ADDITIONAL FORMS AND SEND IT...

YOUR PASSPORT (INDIAN OR AMERICAN) DOES NOT MATTER. THE INDIAN CONSULATE WILL DO THE JOB. THEY WILL NOT STAMP the PICTURE FOR AMERICAN PASSPORT (I AM NOT SURE WHATS THE EXACT LAW, but it's okay, People in India will claim that they need that to be stamped but Tell them the Law, and they will happily accept it)
NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW THE REAL LAWS, ANYWAY.

It depends on what kind of POA you are looking for. I think for matters related to registration of property etc at a government office, you would require a POA attested by Indian consulate.

If its required for Loans etc, every company has different rules. HDFC required the POA in their format and if issued abroad, to be attested by an Indian consulate. ICICI requires the POA in their format but they are OK with POA notarized by any registered notary in US e.g. one at a bank. So some loan companies/banks relax rules but for government related work, you may need POA attested by Indian consulate.

I did not go to consulate as I was in
Iowa state n there is no Indian Consulate
in IOWA. Still that issue is pending.

You might know but I am just giving information,

If you r going to Indian Consulate then you
need to take your Pass Port Size Photo for
POA along with your Pass Port & other
documents like Driving Lic. etc etc.

Do not forget for Thumb Impression on POA.
Notry will tell you, for Male which Thumb
and for Female which Thumb(Right or Left
Hand Thumb)is needed for impression.

As Vinay told it can be done in one day.
