I like the fact that most anywhere you live( in the US ), you can simply walk in to the local school - grade scool/middle school/highschool - and get admissions, even in the middle of the academic year. I think only the richest of the rich and the most politically connected families can afford to do that in India. The rest of us commoners have to deal with bribes, connections, influence, favors at best and face family separation until the school year is over at worst.

Also, for the most part schools here do not keep asking for money for diffrent causes throughout the year. Parents may have to help with Girl scout cookies, but that's about it. No pressure trying to sell tickets for 'variety entertainment fundraisers' of questionable entertainment value.

Shonoo,
I respectfully disagree with what you said about school. What you mentioned is true in US about public schools (govt funded through tax). Same is True in india too for public funded school. Unfortunately for whatever reason (mostly quality) many of us don't want to send our children to such school(Municipaltichya shaalla). But I do want to point the public schools in India are as open as public schools in US. Comparing private schools in India with public schools in US is not correct comparison IMHO.

I have experienced one private school here in US and it was no different (may be just a little in that there was some open quota and admission with lottery). You also need some connections if you don't fit in the open quota. In fact my daugter was very unhappy about that school and we put her back in public school. The private schools here also ask for large amount of fees , building funds and such things.

so although I liked that the quality of public schools is better, I don't see any extra openness than what is available in India.
Schools in inner cities in US, where there is less money per student spent by city, have similar problem like publicly funded schools in India.

Ajay :

Actually that was another point that I had wanted to mention. That most indian parents in the US do actually send their kids to a 'public' school. Of course there are private schools that are prohibitively expensive and snobbish to boot. But quality education is available in most ( suburban at least ) public schools. Children that go to public schools in the US do go on to good career opportunities after high school. Can we say the same about Municipal schools in India ?

How many 'educated', 'middle class' people will think of putting their kids in a municipal school in India ?

NZ is beautiful, very safe. since two years I am living here alone with my daughter but never faced any problem. I have found tht these white people are hardworking, sincere, honest people, most of them.Politicians are always under direct scrutiny of commoners.this thing was new for me.

I am amazed by this obsession with everything alien. I have travelle almost all over the world and I find that Indians are a lonely lot -not accepted emotionally by the local populace, the incoming phone calls are an indication-they are always from Indians .They do so well there but only professionally.I feel sorry for them

ravi- I think you are wrong!
I have been in united state for 3 and half years now..and my experience is, if you are open minded towards what the other cultures, or people from other countires have to offer you, they are equally eager to know the features of your culture.I have made some very close friends from all over the world during my stay here- people from all over US,Mexico,China, Japan, Russia just to name a few.My observation is that even though we as human beings may differ in external thing like what we wear and what we eat etc.,there are a surprisingly high number of things which are common to all of us...So emotionally we are not that different than other people, people who are open minded see that and accept each other..
But if some Indians decide to socialize strictly among themselves and then blame americans or other people for not accepting them- then who can help it?
Thankfully a significant number of Indians do go out and socialize with other people, and I am sure a lot of them would disagree with you..

Dear Mr. Upadhye,
Wonder what gives/gave you the impression that whoever writes on the BB is obsessed with everything alien.

Firstly, 'they' (alien Indians which includes myself) are basically out of India to do well professionally. Why else would anyone ever be out of India? (I assume that was why you found yourself travelling extensively too). I believe, and hope you do too, that the most basic human instincts are survival and enhancement.

Secondly, Indians abroad are very adept in forming networks. This very web site could be one good example. I am myself an average person at best, (hence a good datum to judge the rest); yet I would probably find myself linked to more people in the USA than in India, even if most of them are Indians like myself. I doubt if I could have associated myself to as many different circles had I been in India. There is an extreme much number of activities - both social and personal - that Indians can indulge in without ever having to 'attach' to non-Indians that the idea of trying to 'bond' with other groups may seem entirely unnecessary. A person who is a loner will remain a loner whether he is in India or elsewhere. But if you speak of the Indian community as one package, then I think you are a little away from the truth.

Come to think of it, having a ‘need’ to bond or attach with someone implies loneliness. What if the 'need' isn’t an issue at all? Your statement above seems to imply that because Indians are not accepted, they remain lonely. The fact would be a little different. Acceptance is not essential, hence not a priority. Why should a perfectly happy, well contained and adequately encircled Indian try and mingle with Americans or British or French people if he doesn’t have to? Heterogeneous people can do very well with minimal symbiosys.

Thirdly, 'emotional acceptance' is a frilly term (admittedly, as is 'frilly'). The basis of social structure in most non-Indian countries (countries that you seem to hint at) is independence. My neighbour (an American) is a 92-year-old widow who drives to her doctor and her grocer twice a week all by herself, partly because she has no other choice, and partly because she does not prefer dependency. I'm told she has 6 children, scores of grandchildren and even more great-grandchildren. Is she lonely? YES if she needs attention but isn’t getting it, and NO if she doesn’t want any. Attachment is mutual. If neither is interested, one can not be blamed.

On a lighter note, telephone calls can hardly be a measure of loneliness. In fact, the more you use the telephone, the lonelier you really are. That would probably make most Indians in India a shade lonelier than those outside India. And doesn’t that make sense? :-)

A fitting statement from you would have been, rather, to state what you did to get away from being branded 'lonely' in the various places from your travels abroad.

I am sorry Sir, but I feel sorry for people who second your opinion.

<Admin, Mods, apologies (again) for the diversion>
