I dont think we are referring to "racism" here. If you are favouring your own people , it is not necessarily racism ,otherwise every community will be called racist.

Sto: Mala Zakkinche mhanane patate all this happnes when you are compiting ith them. When I was just a developer, I thought world is butiful no politics everything is driven by your ability and hardwork. when I started working as manager it is all different now. Working a account manager I faced lot of plitics and recisum (including as Mahaguru said like Our own Southies)form various level. As Zakki said, Jews and Chinese have lion sahre in this.

yet - im sure managers are under pressure to deliver - and cannot really afford to indulge in nepotism except those at the very top. besides there is always the risk of lawsuits if it is as blatant as nirakar puts it.

about hiring, all things being equal, being from the same part of the world as the manager can help ... but i doubt if a desi manager would prefer a desi unless he were as good or better than the other candidates (besides, i'd think that the hiring manager, if desi, would be even more particular and make sure tht the new guy is really good, so no one accuses him of nepotism)

Abe all things being equal then some partiality is observed.
Actually in my company a strange partiality occured, that people did not even notice.

A few months ago they were interviewing for a position, and what with the state of economy they got a lot better response than they had expected. So when the interview was conducted, there were at least two who were let's say equal.. now bare in mind, that the manager who was to hire isn't indian, one of the interviewers, was jew other asian(Thai american)...one indian, and the rest americans. Yet of the two candidate, one indian, one asean, guess which one got picked...

sto - that may have to do with track record. indians in general have a good performance and fit in well with the system, so it maybe a matter of going in with what seems to have worked well ... and why not!!

Just to give u an idea of how mgr calulates cost-
assume that co is looking for hiring consultant with expected rate of say 100$/hr for a resource. If this bid is from American co, consultants work for 40hr/week.
but most of indian co consultants work for 60hr/week. but co don't chanrge OT. i.e effective rate is 40*100/60 = $66/hr !

so prefering Indian has this reason as well.

that sir - is the benefit of outsourcing to an indian company - where one is not "hiring" the employee per se ... so dont quite agree about it being the same thing as the favoritism issue
