mi mazya ghari barych asha vastu vaparto. mi small 110 to 220 v converters ghetle ahet. which are available in any electonic shop for a very cheap price. I use following 110 v goods : Cordless Phone, Answering machine, Music system, CD player, Casio synthesizer, hair dryers etc.

People even use Microwave ovens but you need a custom built 110- 220 V transformer. This transformer rating depends on power rating of the appliance.

the converter required is 220 to 110 volts as the US appliances use 110 V. (not 110 to 220)
abt big power consuming appliances like microwave oven, its highly possible that they already have 110 to 240 V as input range. Thus, u don't require spcial converter in that case.
cordless ph, camcorders, laptops or such things also sometimes have same input range (100 to 240) AC to DC adapters. there too u need not have a converter. other small power rated things (electric shaver) needs such converter and is easily available in electrical stores in any city. ~ 200 Rs.

Word of Caution!!
I'm going to use some technical words to clarify more. I assume all are having basic electronic background :o)

Convertor is an electronic circuit which uses SCR's to chop sinusoidal waves to 50% thus giving you an average rms voltage of 110v from 230v. Typically they have a rating not more than 1kw. They are similer to our fan regulators (Rider) in India. You can visualise the effect as switching On & Off a device 100 times (literally!, at 50Hz ;o)) a second, so as to give effective average output of half the source voltage.
These type of convertors can be used in devices that do not have transformers inside

Otherwise, a half cut sinusoidal wave is not good for transformer as an input, which gives rise to heavy spikes at the output. If your cordless telephone has an adaptor of say 110v to 9-12vdc, my advice will be to buy another DC Adaptor for 230v to exact same dc voltage as output, keep in mind the current capacity as well. Do not buy a 230-110v convertor in this case.

Secondly for power consuming equipments such as microwaves, irons, etc, my advice would be, simply, through/dispose it of in US Itself :o) 2 reasons: Voltage conversion at higher power consumption requires a very healthy and hence a bulky transformer. secondly, carrying bulky items as an luggage is I don't feel a worthwhile option.

Sameer: Mazya mate tu Indiatunach Microwave kharedi karavas. There is another aspect here. What about after sales service? If anything goes wrong (which is quite possible the way they handle baggage) all the money is wasted.

Actually Indiat ata changlya quality che microwaves milataat, tyachyat Grill option suddha aste.

Hope this helps!

Swapna, 2 step process aahe.
1. Play your camcorder and record it on a NTSC compatible VCR. It will create an NTSC Video Tape

2. Give it to any Kodak digital photo studio shop, they will convert it into VCD. Let them know the format is NTSC. I guess you'll need to specify the VCD format also.

India and most of the Europe uses PAL system
US uses NTSC
France and some other countries use SECAM system.

Swaps, I'm not sure if you want this to be self-help process or wish to get it converted from professional sources.

Assuming it's first case, it's not that difficult.
1. Upload your video to your PC. Deending upon if you have analoge or digital cam, you have to use dazzle or firewire card. There are few other altenatives also, but these 2 are simpler ones.
2. Convert video to mpeg. Check up vcdhelp.com. site' is pretty intutive and process does not involve rocket science. A weekend's effort will master you in conversion. I've done quite a few myself.
Drop me an email if you have any specific questions.

does DVD players from US work in india???
or the DVD's for that matter???
i once took my portfolio DVD to india, but my friends were not able to see colors.( they watched it black and white ) .....
i want to send DVD player for my sister ( still confused between, portable or normal though, as she has TV in her hostel.)
but just wanted to make sure if ppl use it and if yes of which brand????

(i know that using mod chips you can use game consoles and games even if they are from diffrent regeion .... ) is there something for dvd and dvd players as well??? or there is no need for them at all???
any comments???

najuka,
no branded players like sony, samsung, philips wont work in india. however, the cheap dvd players like apex, norcent, cyberhome do work in india. they also work on 240V/50Hz power supply without any converter.
I have used few brands like norcent, klh, etc.
regarding DVDs, the DVD players have option to play NTSC/PAL DVD. If you play NTSC DVD with DVD player set to PAL, you will not see colors. You have to adjust the DVD player settings accordingly.
Also some players do not play DVDs other than region 1 encoded. There are plenty of hacks those make the DVD player region free. You may find few on doom9.com website.

I had taken Daewoo DVD player (don't remember the model number) to India a couple of years back and it is working great. It works on 240V so that only thing I had to purchase in India was the right plug. I found the hack to make this player region-free and so far we haven't had any problem running any VCD/DVD on it. But these hacks are permanement and can permanently damage the player if not applied correctly.
