Sashal: As of my Info - Once the child is born on US soil then by default he gets american citizenship but incase if parents are 'leaving US for good' then the child can get a US passport and letter from department of immigration which states that the child has a right to choose (between US and home country) citizenship at the age of 21. The info is based on my friends case who was born in US but parents migrated back to India after his birth. I hope this helps.....

Lalu, Storvi, Yogi Thanks ..! malaa kuzUna trI kLlaM kI a child born in the US gets US citizenship but when you decide to go back, and when the child turns 18 he gets to choose between the two as Yogi said .. but if we opt to make Indian passport for the child right now, what happens to his INS status (in particular when the parents are permanent residents)? Also, considering the dual citizenship, is it true that he person having both US and Indian citizenships, will not get a right to vote? Is education in India way to expensive for a child who is a US citizen?

Sashal, as far as voting rights are concerned let me explain: dual citizenship is a misnomer...what it really is is, a person of indian origin with American citizenship will get what is equivalent of a green card, in India. i.e. he/she will not be able to vote/hold public office/serve in military in India(although as far as US is concerned he/she will have all those rights) Truth be told, neither India nor US supports true dual citizenship so you can be the citizen of one or the other not both. So a dual citizenship holder can use Indian Passport for travel to India, but that passport is of no use outside India. This person can however own land/buisiness etc. in India. does that make it any clearer?

>So a dual citizenship holder can use Indian > Passport for travel to India, but that > passport is of no use outside India. Storvi, Please explain this. Do you mean Inside India, the bearer has voting rights? In my opinion, if the dual citizenship owner can live in both the countries without any time restrictions [no visa requirements] and has voting rights is sufficiant enough.

Storvi, so what u said about voting etc., it appears to apply for a child who is born here and is a US citizen by birth but can get Indian citizenship because of parents, right? how abt a child who is born in india, came here along with the parents and gets US citizenship eventually? so voting rights etc. would be determined only by birth country, is what u r saying?

Sashal, a person of Indian citizenship can NEVER get american citizenship unless he/she relinquishes their Indian citizenship. So that situation is out of question. Hence my statement that "Dual Citizenship" is really a misnomer.

http://www.indiaday.org/dual-citizen.htm Some Extracts from the Site: Countries for Dual Citizenship 1.USA 2.Canada 3.Britain 4.Netherlands 5.Italy 6.Ireland 7.Portugal 8.Switzerland 9.Greece 10.Cyprus 11.Israel 12.Australia 13.New Zealand 14.France 15.Sweden 16.Finland For those who have taken foreign passports, the grant of dual citizenship will remove the obstacles in travel to and from India with no multiple visa requirements Persons of Indian origin settled in economically more advanced countries of the world have skills and expertise in vital sectors. There is no doubt, that investments are induced principally by the logic of business considerations and the investment climate. The facility of Dual Citizenship would foster better co-operation in these sectors by way of investments and transfer of skills and resources. The principal rationale of the demand of the Diaspora for dual citizenship, however, is sentimental and psychological. Desire of PIOs to forge emotional and cultural bonds with their country of origin is quite evident in the amount of Philanthropic activities done by them in India. Dual Citizenship shall strengthen this bond and facilitate Diaspora's contribution in India's social Development. Dual Citizenship would also help to perpetuate and cement links of the younger generation of the Diaspora with India as they may be keen to keep in touch with their roots.
