Hi Kirti...

First of all I am sorry to hear about your father's hospitalization. My best wishes are with you and your family.

I will try my best to answer your questions in very simple words. Without knowing or seeing the EKG report of your father, it is very difficult to tell you (by just knowing the fact that the doctor there has ordered an angiography) how serious is your father's problem, besides for that precise reason the doctor has ordered an angiography------ to know the extent of the seriousness----

I am assuming your father was complaining chest pain(or left arm pain or shoulder pain or jaw pain) and thats why he was admitted to the hospital. Reasons for the chest pain are numerous, so as a first step ,when a patient comes to the hospital with chest pain, Doctors do some prilimanary tests, to determine the cause of the chest pain. EKG is one of those diagonstic tests. Testing blood for the level of certain cardiac enzyems is onother one and stress cardiolyte test is onother and finally coronary angiography is the most invasive and accurate diagnostic test to find out if the chest pain is due to any Heart problem.

The chest pain , if it is because of heart, is usually because of the blockage of the one or all 4 of the major arteries which supply the oxygenated blood to the heart muscle itself. Such chest pain is called Angina and the resulting injury to the Heart muscle is called Myocardial Infarction. Coronary Angiography tells the Doctor the extent of the blockage of the any or all 4 of the major arteries supplying the blood to the Heart muscle i.e. if blocked, whats the percentage of those blocks... i.e. whether it is 50 percent blocked or 70 or 90 or 100 percent block. It also tells you where exactly is the location of the block. Many times if such blocks are found and if they are big enough blocks, then they are removed by doing Baloon Angioplasty at the same time when the Coronary Angiography is done. Decision to remove such blockage using Anioplasty depends on many factors----- age of the patient, location of the block, extent of the block etc etc..

If that block can't be removed by using baloon angioplasty or if in Doctors expert opinion, if the patient is young and healthy enough and could be better helped by an open heart bypass surgery, he/she will recommend the patient to go for an open heart bypass surgery, instead of baloon angioplasty. The recurrence of blockage is less after bypass surgery compared to baloon angioplasty. But on the other hand, baloon angioplasty is less invasive and less risky procedure, than doing an open heart surgery, which is a major invasive surgery, hence potentially could be more risky. So the Cardiologist weighs the risks and benifits, on case by case basis and recommends appropiate options available for the patient.

So to answer your question in a summary form--- your father's EKG probably showed enough changes to warrant further diagnostic test such as Coronary Angiography--- to determine if there are serious blocks in your father's coronary arteries. Just the procedure of Coronary Angiography is not serious---its very routine diagnostic procedure-- The seriousness will be in the results of that test i.e. if that test shows any blocks in your fathers coronary arteries and if there are such blocks, then how big are those blocks----Depending on the extent and location of the blocks and Cardiologist's expert opinion, your father will be given 4 options---

1. Nothing is necessary... just the change in life style....eating healthy, weight loss, regular exercise, no smoking if a smoker etc etc
2. Neither Baloon Angioplasty nor Open Heart Bypass surgery. Instead treating your father's coronary artery blocks medically--- with medications.
3. Baloon Angioplasty.
4. Open Heart Coronary Bypass Surgery.

I hope my explanation helped you understand better whats going on with your father. As far as 15,000 Rs. for the procedure , I can't comment on that, since I am in USA, but sounds reasonable---( but again I am comparing with the fees here in USA!). I will suggest you to ask few other Cardiologists there, to get an idea, what others charge for such procedure in Pune.

Once again my best wishes are with you and your family.

My father underwent angiography and subsequently angioplasty a couple of years ago. Both recommended and carried out by Dr. Shirish Sathe. We found his fees + hospital charges very reasonable. (about 15000 for angiography and a little over 1 lakh for angioplasty) But of course, the life it saved is priceless...
And Dr. Sathe is a renowned cardiologist and we had full faith in his diagnosis.

I must admit I have coem to this particular forum out of mischievous curiosity.
Actually the title "Problems related to heart" does not appear to be appropriate. It should have been "Heart Ailments" or something like that. I perceived "Problems of the heart" to be rather referring to literature rather than medicine!

Mazhya babanchi nukatich deenanath madhye CABG mhanajech coronary artery bypass graft surgery zali...operation Dr. Ashutosh Hardikar yanni keli...kahi goshti navin kalalya ya anubhawatun mhanun tumachya barobar share karat ahe...kadachit konala hyacha upyog hou shakel...

1. My father belongs to non-smoking, non-drinking category....he does his exersizes regularly for last 25 years...so anybody can have heart attack...

2. He didnt have any chest pain in the attack...only symptoms were nausea and vomitting...which we ignored as gastric trouble & indigestion for 4-5 days...we came to know abt attack by chance when he had gone to doctor for checking blood sugar

3. If ECG is taken immediately after heart attack, it is usually normal...abnormalities in the ECG appear only 3-4 days after attack.

4. He had 3 blockages...98%, 56%, 72% so bypass was must.

5. Angiography does cost around 15K...thats right.

6. Even though O is considered as universal donor, in the cardiac surgeries the blood group exactly matching the patients blood group us needed...in my father's case we needed only A+ donors...

7. First relation blood donors cannot be used...so even though my sister & myself are A+, our blood is of no use.

8. patient is kept in ICU under observation for 2-3 days (depends on patients condition) & then shifted to room. 8-10 days is total time in hosiptal. Patient can go home in a car after discharge...

9. Followup visit is 1 month after discharge.

10. Total time for full recovery after bypass is 3 months...

11. We had a fantastic experience of deenanath hospital, dr. hardikar, dr. gadkari (who performed angiography in DMH).

Well AnilBhai, I will visit Gulmohar as you said.
FYI: I wish speedy recovery to all the heart patients.
By the way one of my friend's dad was operated for a bypass at Poona Hospital and they had a very good experience of the Doctors. Its been almost a year now and the patient is keeping healthy by God'd grace.
