The Lackadaisical Sweeper by Gauri Deshpande -------------------------------------------- The Lackadaisical Sweeper, published in 1997, is the first collection of short stories in English by Gauri Deshpande. Deshpande is a well-known Marathi writer and translator. She has published poems, essays, short stories in both Marathi and English. A Maharashtrian friend told me yesterday that when Gauri Deshpande's writings started appearing her bold and untraditional themes took the Marathi literary scene by storm. This collection contains a few stories written originally in English and a couple of stories translated from Marathi. There is an afterword by R. Raja Rao. The stories deal with various and widely differing themes - but the main theme is the trails Indians living abroad face. This is the background of the title story,"The Lackadaisical Sweeper", of "Hello, Stranger!", "Whatever Happened to", "Rose Jam", "Dmitri in the Afternoon", etc. The travails faced by foreigners - Americans coming to India is important too as in the story, "The Debt". "Insy Winsy Spider" is a delightful story set in India. A couple of stories - "Map" and "Brand New Pink Nikes" deal with the inner feelings of women. "Map" is a ground breaking story in its honesty and openness. The stories in the collection are of uneven standard. A couple of them are extremely good, but quiet of few of them leave little impression. The story I loved most is "Insy Winsy Spider". It has a simple plot, yet asks a profound question. Deshpande's protagonist asks "What are 'we', when we are 'we'?". She comes to the conclusion that though such a question can be answered negatively by saying what 'we' are not, it is really almost impossible to find out what 'we' are. Vishalakshi is a woman who knows her mind. When her father thinks of finding her a husband now that she has got her B.A. degree, she opts to do an M.A. in philosophy - Buddhist philosophy, even though at that time she does not know whether in Hinayana or Mahayana. Vishalakshi goes on to do M. Phil, on "Some Problems About the Concept of Self in Hinayana Philosophy", begins to teach, falls in love with another teacher of philosophy and marries him. A daughter, Maitreyi, is also born. As house keeping has never been the first thing on her agenda, she decides that she does not 'have time to pick over finicky, dainty vegetables', and serves potatoes and doodhi alternatively. Intellectual activities are much more important to her than mopping and washing up. Everything is under control till Maitreyi, who is not yet eighteen, and has not even finished her B.A. degree announces one evening at the dining table that she plans to get married. What a disaster to strike such an academic family! When the mother confronts the daughter as to what she wants to do with her life, which she can fashion in any way she wants to, she answers, "I don't want to do 'anything else', Aai. I just want to get married and look after my home and family." What a slap in the face for the mother who has devoted all her life to 'higher' thinking! The mother has assumed till now that it that the daughter would naturally follow her example of how life should be lived, of what things are of genuine value in life. And the daughter has quietly decided that she is quite different from her mother. She knows that 'she' is 'she and is certain that she is not her mother. A profound knowledge that seems to evade mothers, rather parents, in general! "Map" is a kind of rebellious awakening of a woman. A woman who had been the puppet to the tunes called by the men in her life, has decided to discard all the chains that bound her hitherto and reshape her map of life newly. She is now the caller of the tunes. She renames the map of her body, and comes alive, at last. In saying, "This is the map of my body and these are the names of my body parts. I have imagined them all, all by myself, and so they are mine, above all." the woman is asserting her independence, and rejecting the necessity of a man to give a shape to her life. In his afterword, Raja Rao interprets the story as not only dealing with gender rights but compares the narrator woman to India and the cartographer to the imperial power. The story which I could not relate to is The Debt. Anita, an American girl studying in Berkeley gets to know Sajan Singh whom she marries much later. A child comes at the most unwanted moment, at least as far as Anita is concerned. She decides to get an abortion, much against Sajan's wishes. The abortion does not take place, as Sajan is killed in an accident. The clump of cells has progressed too far into being a human entity for her to get rid of it. After Peter Robert Singh is born, and when Anita receives the insurance money, she decides on the spur of the moment to visit Sajan's father, Dr. Bishambar Singh, in Roorkee. Anita's arrival in India is full of travails as if her inner feelings are mirrored in her surroundings. The place is dirty, the heat is terrible, the food is hot, the stench unbearable, there is even a donkey on the road which is hit by a speeding truck with nobody doing anything to about it. No wonder Anita does not know what she was doing there. Before she gathers enough initiative to leave Roorkee, leave India, she hands over to her father in law, part of the insurance money that she had got after Sajan's death. If everything else was kind of tolerable in the story, Sajan's father's reaction at receiving the money is most ununderstandable. He says to Anita, " Thank you. I can use this. It is the duty of children to look after their parents in their old age and you have fulfilled that obligation for Sajan by bringing this to me now. That is just as it should be." I wonder whether Gauri Deshpande is not clear about the difference between the concepts of Dharma and Debt. Or is Gauri Deshpande saying how the concept of Dharma is misunderstood in Indian thinking? That one becomes ruthless when one mistakes Dharma to be debt to the extent of thinking money as an acceptable compensation for the untimely death of a son? Are love and affection acceptable substitutes for duty and obligation? The strange thing is that Anita, the American girl, accepts this chain in the bond of parent-children relationship. She tells her little son, "Remember Peter, children must look after their old parents. That debt has to be paid. One way or another." Reading these stories - apart in "Map" - I failed to recognise the boldness in themes which is supposed to have characterised Gauri Deshpande's earlier writings. It could be so because Indian writing has come a long way since she started writing. One of the surprising things in the collection is the afterword by R. Raja Rao. In what comes across like a very condescending tone Raja Rao admonishes Deshpande for not having a sense of uncertainty, for being gynocentric, that makes the narrators being too cocksure of their opinions. The book has many wrong spellings - for example Raj Rao and not Raja Rao - a mistake which could and should be corrected in the next edition. End!

rasik , Thanks for that beutiful posting which is cut and posted by u !! GD writes in English but I think her marathi literature is much much better than her English writing . The story named " RIGHT ON SISTER " frm AHE HE ASA AHE can be translated in English but the reader has to be aware of the life-styles , value of traditional so called higher middle class marathi people for that . I think for the same reason translation is difficult job ; languge can be translated but not the cultural heritage behind those words . Very few translators are able to do so EG . Shanta shelke did translation of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women with the name CHOUGHIJANI -- which is fab .
